Student Profile
Arie Litovsky, Undergraduate in Computer Science
“The atmosphere at UT Dallas is radically different from other college campuses, and the more I visit universities around the country, the more I see this. Students here are smart and serious about studying, but they know how to balance a challenging set of classes with an enjoyable social life.
“I think some of the best experiences in college involve meeting and hanging out with other people. In fact, I’ve developed deep friendships with people from within and outside of my major, and we’ve carried on conversations about everything from life to politics to religion.
“I’m a computer science major, and I’ve used computers and technology since I was little, so the decision to come to UT Dallas came naturally. Our computer science program is also highly reputable among Texas universities, and the two factors made a good match.
"One of the best things about this University is that most of the classes I’ve taken are small. This allows me to ask questions and interact directly with professors and other students.
“When I first came here, I got involved in several organizations and my schedule filled up quickly. In order to get things done, I was always in hurry. Since then, I’ve learned to relax and make time for myself.
“Right now, I’m the webmaster for Meteor Theater, a free campus movie theater. I also work on the Web site for A Modest Proposal, an alternative student news publication.
“One of the best pieces of advice I can offer students is, don’t be afraid to try anything new, regardless of how radical it might seem. UT Dallas is still so young and flexible that anyone with some initiative can institute change that will make a lasting difference.”
Arie Litovsky plans to pursue a Ph.D. in computer science after graduation. Currently he’s an active participant in the Eugene McDermott Scholars Program, which awards scholarships that cover all the expenses of a four-year academic education in concert with intensive extracurricular experiences, including internships, travel and cultural enrichment.
