Nanomedicine is rapidly emerging as an interdisciplinary field of research to develop and apply highly integrated nanomaterials to diagnose, treat, and monitor diseases. This dynamic discipline combines engineering and materials science with pharmaceutical and medical sciences to translate key advances in nanotechnology into clinical practice. Many existing platforms are under intense investigation to provide targeted delivery and controlled release of small molecular drugs, therapeutic proteins, and DNA in order to maximize clinical efficacy with reduced toxicity. New nanoscale platforms have also been established for molecular imaging applications with improved specificity and sensitivity for early detection of diseases.
The goal of the Nanomedicine Symposium 2006 is to provide a comprehensive overview of the key advances in nanomedicine and nanotechnology to the Dallas/Fort Worth community. The Symposium includes keynote and invited lectures from renowned experts and scientists that cover a broad range of topics in nano drug delivery systems, bioMEMS devices, nano imaging probes, nanomaterial biocompatibility, and multifunctional nanomedicine. A poster session is also concurrent with the Symposium to showcase the broad activities in the three area UT campuses (UT Arlington, UT Southwestern, and UT Dallas). The Symposium aims to serve a broad audience in the DFW Metroplex, including scientists and engineers in academia and the biotech industry, as well as physicians and business specialists who are interested in this exciting and rapidly evolving field.
