EE Seminar Series Optimal FIR Estimation of Discrete-Time State-Space Models- by Yuriy Shmaliy, Guanajuato University, Mexico. Optimal estimation of signal parameters and system models is often required to formalize a posteriori knowledge about undergoing processes in the presence of noise. Therefore filtering, smoothing and prediction have become key tools of statistical signal, image and speech processing and found applications in algorithms of various electronic systems. Estimation can be provided using methods of finite impulse response (FIR) linear optimal filtering having strong features, such as the inherent bounded input/bounded output stability and robustness against temporary model uncertainties and round-off errors. Inaugural Gateways to Excellence in Math & Science Lecture
Nobel Laureate Carl Wieman on "Science Education in the 21st Century"-Guided by experimental tests of theory and practice, science has advanced rapidly in the past 500 years. Guided primarily by tradition and dogma, science education, meanwhile, has remained largely medieval. Research on how people learn is now revealing how many teachers badly misinterpret what students are thinking and learning from traditional science classes and exams. However, research is also providing insights on how to do much better. The combination of this research with modern information technology is setting the stage for a new approach that can provide the relevant and effective science education for all students that is needed for the 21st century. Dr. Wieman won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2001 along with Dr. Eric A. Cornell, Dr. Wolfgang Ketterle.

Metal Gate Electrode Impurity Engineering for Control of Effective Work Function by James J. Chambers, Advanced CMOS, Texas Instruments, Incorporated.Understanding all the variables that control the effective work function (EWF) of metal gates on Hf-based gate dielectrics has proven to be a challenging task.  In the literature, doping, capping layers, and anneals have been demonstrated to manipulate the metal/dielectric interface and modify the work function.

This talk will report the results of joint work performed with UTD investigating the use of low temperature oxygen anneals to increase the EWF, joint work performed with NCSU investigating the use of embedded Ti layers to getter oxygen for EWF reduction and joint work performed with Materials Design for ab initio calculations to investigate the impact of oxygen induced dipoles in shifting the EWF.

Model Based Imaging: In Search of the Free Lunch  by Professor Charles Bouman, Purdue University.  Over the last two decades, digital imaging applications have evolved from a niche application into a huge commercial enterprise; and along the way, model-based imaging techniques have evolved into a core set of theoretical tools that form a major component of the field’s theoretical foundation. The primary goal in model-based techniques is to construct a model of the image and the imaging system, and then to use this framework to infer information that is not directly available.   For more information, click on http://www.utdallas.edu/~kehtar/ieee-sp.

Department of Materials Science and Engineering Quantifying Changes at Material Interfaces Using Dissipative Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM-D) by Mark A. Poggi, Ph.D.,
Q-Sense Inc.-New technologies are being developed to quantitatively measure the surface properties of material interfaces. One particular technique, Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation Monitoring (QCM-D), measures several dynamic properties of materials and biological molecules. Using QCM-D, changes in structural properties and mass can be simultaneously monitored in real-time in air or in liquid. This technique provides a more fundamental understanding of nano-scale material behavior. This presentation will begin with the fundamental aspects of this technique, followed by examples of current applications, such as quantifying self-assembly processes, dynamically following electrochemical processes, monitoring structural changers in materials, dynamically following changers in nano-scale systems and biological studies

Final Presentations by students in the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Summer Program, a National Science Foundation  funded program, to study software safety.

For software-dependent systems in which failures can result in significant property damage, injury, or death, software safety must be a principal consideration. Software engineers involved with such projects in both the government and private industry require an understanding of existing software safety standards and practices, as well as an awareness of emerging trends and developments in the area.

Our research objectives are twofold: to integrate functional specifications with fault tree models for testable safety analysis and to generate safety tests from the integrated specifications. The first objective allows potential components and system failures to be specified explicitly together with the intended behaviors of a system. The second objective aims at detection of potential failures through systematic safety-driven testing.

Biomedical Engineering Seminar

Development of a Distributed Wireless Biological Sensor Array”by Dr. Robert L. Rennaker II, The University of Oklahoma - There are approximately 100 billion neurons in the human brain, each genetically programmed to form semi-specific connections with other neurons, sometimes over relatively large distances. This inherent connectivity determines the general organization of the brain, with functional areas forming stereotypical maps that are conserved within and across many species. The technical challenge of simultaneously recording from multiple, separate brain areas is a problem well-suited for a biomedical engineering approach, bridging medical research with modern engineering. Dr Rennaker's lab is currently developing a wireless distributed neural interface system that will allow multi-site monitoring of distributed neural activity and will provide unparalleled access to neural coding in behaving subjects.

Robert L. Rennaker is an associate professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Oklahoma, where he is also a member of the OU Bioengineering Center and primary investigator in the Neural Engineering Lab.

Scaling MOSFETs to 10 nm: Coulomb Effects, Source Starvation, and Virtual Source by Massimo V. Fischetti from the University of Massachusetts – Amherst. In our attempts to scale FETs to the 10 nm length, alternatives to conventional Si CMOS are sought on the grounds that Si seems to have reached its technological and performance limits and that the use of alternative high-mobility channel materials will provide the missing performance. With the help of numerical simulations here we establish the reasons why indeed Si seems to have hit a performance barrier and whether or not high mobility semiconductors can indeed grant us our wishes. The role of long-and short-range electron-electron interactions is revisited together with a recent analysis of the historical performance trends. The density-of-states (DOS) bottleneck and source starvation issues are also reviewed to see what advantage alternative substrates may bring us. Finally, the well-known "virtual source model" is analyzed to assess whether it can be used as a quantitative tool to guide us to the 10 nm gate length.

“Balancing Mission Requirements for Networked Autonomous Aircraft Performing Video Reconnaissance” by Dr. Nicholas Gans, U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory.  Many control tasks require the designer to account for balancing competing interests or requirements. If the task requirements can be prioritized and implemented as cost functions, it is possible to create continuous control laws to accomplish the tasks according to their priority. This problem is investigated for the specific mission of monitoring and tracking groups of moving targets using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) connected via an ad-hoc network.

Abstract: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and fibers have been one of the major materials in the history of modern civilization over the past 120 years, initially for applications in electric lighting, and subsequently as performance composites in the aerospace industries. Over the last decade, the rediscovery of carbon nanotubes as exploratory nanomaterials has led to an intense investigation of their properties for many applications, including electronic technology, sensor technology and green technology. These technologies promise improved devices and products that would enhance our quality of life.   For more infomation, click here.

“Commercializing Nanotechnology” presentation by Mr. James Von Ehr
Founder and Chairman, Zyvex. Several years ago, Jim Von Ehr sold his software company AltSys to Macromedia for over $100 million. He used the money to start
Zyvex Labs. His vision: the world’s first commercial atomically precise manufacturing company. Is his dream a reality?

Nano-scale manufacturing promises to be the kind of disruptive technology that can make overnight billionaires and turn entire in-dustries on their heads. But there’s a problem—it’s hugely expensive to develop products and fundamental research is still being done in the field. How do you compete in this complex environment?
Come hear Jim’s take on these questions and many more as we explore the fascinating science and business of nanotechnology.

Condensed Matter and Materials Physics Seminar Series “Silicon Starting Materials for Advanced Technology Nodes” Transistor scaling to improve MOSFET device speed/frequency of operation and to pack more transistors in a microprocessor has become increasingly difficult in the sub-65-nm gate regime. Problems include short channel effects such as sub-threshold leakage current and a high level of leakage through the ultra-thin gate dielectric. In order to overcome the problems associated with scaling, many new device fabrication materials solutions (e.g., high-k/metal gate) have been and will continue to be introduced as the industry presses on to 32 nm and beyond. This presentation will review core silicon wafer parametric requirements for extremely flat surfaces and a near-surface region free of harmful defects and metallic impurities.
