Park Receives IEEE CASE Best Paper Award

Dr. Wooram Park, assistant professor of mechanical engineering in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science, received the Best Paper Award at The 11th annual IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE 2015).

IEEE CASE represents the flagship automation conference of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society. The conference aims to bring together researchers in automation from both industry and academia, together with industrial practitioners, to present and discuss the latest advances and developments in automation science and engineering.

Park’s paper discussed how electron microscopy (EM) could be improved to observe protein structures. The current technique is time-consuming, and requires thousands to millions of images to be taken, and then processed by the user, he said.

“In this work, we developed an automated procedure that post-processes the EM image,” Park said. “The images are automatically aligned and averaged to reduce the image noise and enhance the protein image quality.”
